In our lives as New Zealanders our historical content looks back at the places we came from and how we got here. On which ship or canoe decided on the area in which our ancestors settled. These works in greater part are about this journey. My works of the last year reflected this journey in more representational pieces. These where often multi-imaged works about aspects of the places I passed through, from both New Zealand and around the world. During that time I had little inclination to paint about the landscape. However these travels proved to be such a rewarding experience that I simply had to put these images on canvas. I use many layers of glazes, which combine with the other elements to produce a greater intensity of depth than seen before. The intensity of colour remains as always but appears muted by calming earthy tones. Where these works will lead me I do not know but the journey I find fascinating. It allows for a freedom of expression that has no boundaries or rules, no political protocol. I have never been one to be fettered by the political ventures of the art hierarchy. It has always been fantanstic to be able to say what I wanted in the manner in which I wanted. Of that I am eternally grateful.
