Artist Name: Venus Hot Glass
Venus Hot Glass is a small Christchurch-based glass blowing studio operated by glass artists Ian Walters and Tokiko Tatemoto. They make their glass from a mixture of minerals including silica sand from Mt. Somers in the mid-Canterbury region. Once mixed these materials are then melted in a furnace at 1300 Degrees Celsius to form molten glass. The glass is kept hot enabling it to be blown or manipulated into a variety of forms. Crushed coloured glass is melted into clear molten glass to give every piece its own unique and funky appearance. 'Working with molten glass is hot, challenging and sometimes frustrating with a very high gas bill and occasionally some annoying burns, yet the process is very exciting and addictive. It requires intense concentration and stamina to form soft glowing material into hard transparent colourful glass creations, which are in total contrast to the inferno from which they were born' 'We hope you enjoy our work' Ian and Tokiko
