Artist Name: Peter Collis
In 1978 Peter Collis began potting full time and established his home studio nine years later. His works were all about technique, elegant form and resolved surface treatment - smooth, decorated, highly glazed and intensely coloured on classical shapes. To choose a decorative element, such as the familiar lustre work Peter Collis is known for, the forms and base glaze have been sympathetic to the interaction of the effects lustre gives, and that's his challenge. Once successful, the remaining challenge for Peter is to produce the best possible pieces. The effects of lustre are striking, but in the way which he creates his work using rhythmical brush-strokes on rich black or blue stoneware glazes, tends to give a rich softness to the pieces. Collis's inspiration comes from other media . Invitations to exhibit and give lectures in Japan and Singapore since 1993 have helped clarify his ideas and encouraged him to consolidate his work while finding additional new directions. Despite his proficiency in throwing clay, Peter understands the importance of experimentation and it is this experimentation that presents him with the strong challenge of creating wonderful artwork.
